White Winter Trees

With more snow on the way here in France, I thought I would share my recent discovery of acoustic folk rock trio The Staves and their latest release "White Winter Trees:

The sisters hail from Watford, so whilst English roses all three, they also have a Joni Mitchell 70's vibe to their sound which is quite unexpected. The animation for "White Winter Trees" is really beautiful and unusual and the song seems to stick with you - I've been humming it for days. Their debut album "The Dead and Born and Grown" is out now. I'm off to snuggle up and watch the snow falling...

Paperman

Last Saturday night saw the handing out of the Annie awards in Hollywood - the International Animated Film Society's annual gongs for the best in animation and Disney's Oscar nominated short film "Paperman" deservedly won Best Animated Short.

If you want a brilliant, short, sharp hit of romance, this is it. Director John Kahr has used both traditional old style hand drawing and state of the art computer animation to fashion a joyous seven minute silent love story, in black and white (with just a touch of red), set in mid-century New York. It's exquisite story telling and a near perfect blend of old and new techniques, and the best thing? Disney have generously made it available on the internet for all to see and enjoy. I saw it with my boys when we went to see "Wreck It Ralph" (which picked up 5 Annies on Saturday night) but it's just as wonderful to watch on the small screen. Grab a coffee, sit back and see for yourself. Enjoy. And if it doesn't win the Oscar come February 24th, I'll eat my lipstick...

Chic of the Week: Craving Carven

So the news is out -  the Beckhams are coming to Paris. Well, in reality Becks will be playing for Paris Saint Germain and VB and their boys will be primarily based in London, but that gives me an excuse to post a picture of Becks (sigh) and gives La Beckham carte blanche to let her inner Edith Piaf out now if she should so choose. (Allez Victoria!)

We've already seen an inkling of a French fashion love affair from Mme. Beckham in this signature cropped collared sweater by my 'chic of the week' label Carven. She looks neat and understated, (with one of her own clutches) - a playful look on the French 'gamine' style, which is what Carven is all about.

The uber cool Frenchman Guillaume Henry has been the creative director of the revived fashion house since 2009, after previous stints at Paule Ka and Givenchy. Henry is interested in dressing the everyday modern woman and his designs manage to be both modern and timeless to suit all ages, and thanks to this wider appeal the label has quickly gained cult status. Not bad going for a brand that had fallen way below the fashion radar until 4 years ago. Now, if style maven Alexa Chung wears Carven, we all want to.

Most recently Henry collaborated with Petit Bateau and the collection is a perfect marriage between the two French brands. Classic styles are re-invented - whether the detachable Peter Pan collar, the quirky mini dress (see Alexa below) or the use of strong colours, all using Petit Bateau's trademark jersey, and the Carven quality shines through. I have treated myself to one of the collars, so will be able to add that little touch of Carven to my everyday outfits.

Alexa looking super sweet in a Petit Bateau & Carven dress. She is so good at wearing flats too, very Françoise Hardy.

Spring/Summer 2013 Ready To Wear and the mood is slightly more grown up but Henry's trademark elements are clearly visible whether in the lines of the sharp silhouettes or in the strong, streamlined dresses.

I love the emphasis on the shoulder with the sharp cutaway, it gives both the blouse above and the dress below a real edge.

Collars, cutouts and colour mix = Carven's unique magic.

The Carven girl is Parisian to the core, she's hip, she's cool and we all to be a little bit like her. Crave on.

Reasons to be cheerful Part 1: Love, Laughter and Ladurée

Thank goodness we are into February and the unhappiest day of the year is behind us.  Blue Monday has been and gone so the only way is up. My guaranteed happiness formula is a box of macarons from Ladurée and watching old Hollywood musicals - preferably together. Nothing raises my spirits more than watching Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly et al effortlessly tapdancing their way into the hearts of their paramours - it's style, soul and sunshine all the way.

How elegant and classy do Fred and Ginger look?

Jean Dujardin and Bérenice Béjo were toe-tappingly perfect as Georges Valentin and Peppy Miller in "The Artist".  An exhilarating re-incarnation of the heyday of Hollywood - sheer joy.

As tapdancing is to Hollywood, so Ladurée macarons are to Paris. I know there are other makes, but these are the ones for me. The flavours, the colours, the texture, the shops, the packaging, it's all just spot on, and if you get the chance to taste one you won't regret it. They are also the perfect bite size, refined and sophisticated - the Fred and Ginger of the patisserie world.

Very cleverly, there is now a whole Ladurée empire: beauty products, candles, home fragrances, perfumes, confectionery - each item as delectable and desirable as the next.

I first tasted these 'gourmandises' when I lived in Paris as a student many years ago and now I am lucky enough to have a Ladurée shop in nearby downtown Geneva. English Gent treats me on special occasions as they are fiendishly expensive, so I thought if Lorraine Pascale can do it, then I'd have a go myself.  (Small difference, she's a trained patisserie chef with her own TV show and I'm not). Here's her recipe from "Baking Made Easy". You will need a piping bag fitted with a 1cm/½in nozzle.

Ingredients

 Preparation method

  1. Preheat the oven to 170/C/325F/Gas 5 and line a large baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Put the icing sugar, ground almonds and 40g/1½oz egg whites together in a large bowl and mix to a paste.
  3. Put the water and caster sugar in a small pan and heat gently to melt the sugar, then turn up the heat and boil until the mixture starts to go syrupy and thickens - I don’t use a thermometer but if you prefer to use one, it should read 115C/239F at this stage.
  4. Whisk the remaining 50g/2oz egg whites in a small bowl until medium-stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed from the bowl, then pour in the sugar syrup, whisking until the mixture becomes stiff and shiny. For coloured macaroons, add a few drops of food colouring. Tip this meringue mixture into the almond paste mixture and stir gently until the becomes stiff and shiny again.
  5. Spoon into the piping bag. Pipe a little mixture under each corner of the baking paper to stop it sliding around. With the bag held vertically, pipe 4cm/1½in flat circles onto the lined tray, about 2cm/¾in apart, twisting the bag after each one. The mixture should be quite loose to give a smooth finish. The piping will leave a small ‘tip’ on each circle so, when they’re all piped, give the tray 2–3 slams on a flat surface to flatten them.
  6. Leave to stand for 30 minutes to form a skin then bake in the oven for 12–15 minutes with the door slightly ajar until firm. Remove from the oven, lift the paper off the baking tray and leave the macaroons to cool on the paper.
  7. When cool, sandwich the macaroons together with whipped cream. They can be kept for a couple of days, if they hang around that long!

Three attempts later, and feeling just a tiny bit pleased with myself, I think I've cracked it. Here are the results, using yellow paste food colouring and lemon curd filling.

My top tips would be to use food colouring paste (eg Sugarflair), because you don't want the final mixture to be too runny, (warning - it's a messy process getting it into the piping bag!) and you must mix (with a spatula or spoon, don't be tempted to use the beaters) the meringue into the almond paste and not the other way round as it totally ruins the consistency. I also had to beat my meringues and sugar syrup for a good 5 minutes to stiffen it up.  Next up I'm going to try to make pale pink ones with a rosewater cream filling, and dark pink red with a raspberry jam/cream filling. I'll report back.

Now as I settle down to watch "An American in Paris", I couldn't resist putting my own macarons into an old Ladurée box. Cheeky I know and with full apologies, but I swear it makes them taste even better...

Belles of the Ball Part 1

In a sea of awards ceremonies at this time of year, it's easy to become a bit jaded by endless photos of the stars on the red carpet. Some play it safe, some try too hard, some get it right and some get it just plain wrong! I like choosing my stand out star/outfit for each major event and interestingly, after the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild awards this month, both my winners are wearing French couture. Perhaps all these years of living here are finally starting to have their effect on me.

And the 'After My Own Fashion' award at the Golden Globes goes to.... Anne Hathaway in Chanel

She looks so beautiful in this white, crystal encrusted Chanel gown, with her amazing pixie hair cut and simple jewellery, she quite took my breath away. It seems fitting that she should be winning awards for her role as Fantine in ' Les Miserables' when her mother had performed the same role many years earlier and inspired Anne to follow in her footsteps. 'I dreamed a dream' indeed. Red carpet perfection, I'm not sure how she can outdo herself at the Oscars...

And onto the SAG awards last Sunday night, and amidst a sea of ho hum dresses and the odd frock horror (Sigourney Weaver I love you, but what were you thinking?) the hands down winner for me was.... Marion Cotillard in Dior.

Wearing Dior pre Fall 2013 with a Chopard watch and diamonds she is effortlessly elegant, simple, chic and well, oh so French. She reminds me of Grace Kelly - French royalty.

As you can see, the bodice has been subtly altered from the showroom version and with the stark definition between the white and the navy on the nipped in waist and the deep pockets adding that touch of modernity, this is Raf Simons' Dior New Look for the 21st Century.

Coming soon, Belles of the Ball Part 2: the BAFTAS and the Oscars.
